Birthdays and weekends

Last week was Jason's 22nd Birthday. Before church Scott, Mike, Brady, and I rushed around getting balloons and party food to throw him a bash. We bought 24 packs of balloons and decided to FILL his room with them and streamers. In 30 minutes we got about half of his room filled, then after church about 10 of us went back and filled the rest of his room up. Scott had already taken him to the Little Apple Brewery then the rest of us met up with them and had a lovely time eating together. I am so bummed because they beat us back to their house and we missed his reaction. We did get some videos of what the room looked like however!

At 6:00 Thursday morning I woke up to a call from Jhoe. She said that our door was tied shut from the outside and wanted me to unlock it from the inside. The guys had decided to use some pizza boxes that they had been saving all year and hang them up over our door. Unfortunately for them, Jhoe again was the one that found the surprise and had it taken down before I saw it. However, later when I went to recycle I found my car in a state of attack.

When I opened my door some balloons escaped and I immediately was attacked by a guy walking to his apartment. He told me that if I didn't go pick up the popped pieces he was going to take down my license plate and turn me in for littering. I asked him why if I took the time to go recycle would I leave the pieces in the grass? He told me he didn't know that's what I was going to do he just saw balloons being thrown from my vehicle. Of course he didn't take the time to help me pick the balloons up, he just wanted to yell at me. There was one guy that saw what was going on and ran over and asked if he could have a balloon. Of couse, it was the same guy that was arrested with his roomies the night before. I think they got caught using drugs or something : S

Thursday Matt, Mike, and I headed for Champaign, IL where Matt's sister, husband, and 2 kids live. Probably the most laid back and relaxing weekend I have ever experienced! We spent all day Friday and Saturday at Kim and Neal's where we just kinda hung out. Sunday morning we drove over to a wedding in Gridley, IL then headed home again. When I travel the road trip is usually most of the fun and again it was that way. I had some pretty great chats with Matt and Mike as well as lots of fun. Even if Matt made us take an hour detour on the way out and wouldn't stop making "slam on women" comments such as "my wife won't get out of the kitchen long enough to do that."

Wasting Away our World

Yesterday on my way home I was driving behind a semi with my windows down. It was DISGUSTING and I could not figure out why it smelled so nasty until I passed it and realized it was a trash semi. A trash semi carrying thousands of pounds of compacted waste from the Wichita area down to the middle of nowhere KS where they dump it in the ground. On my way back to Manhattan this morning in a 20 minute stretch I met 10 trucks fully loaded. The trucks run all day carrying around 1700 tons to dump daily. Read here

Because we donʼt have an option of being organic in EVERYTHING we do, we have to produce waste. What are we doing with that waste? I found some very interesting articles about:
- 1100 tons of electronic waste being dumped daily, things that work, people just upgrading
- 11,000 tons of waste daily dumped from just Las Vegas area
- 240 million tons of waste daily

How often do you take the trash to the dumpster? What is in that trash can? ALL of that if you live in town goes into our ground. Recycling is the third R of the three Rʼs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Recycling means taking a product or material at the end of its useful life and turning it into a usable raw material to make another product. Think about it.

Springtime?

As soon as a small glimpse into the lovely time of spring pops into sight, the town of Manhattan gets excited. Yesterday my neighbors and I were outside on our individual porches because of the gorgeous weather. We were trying to studying but the FarmHouse frat boys next door refused to let us do so. We couldn't help but be distracted when around 30 of them popped out of no where onto their roof and yelled and screamed as a big tube rolled down onto the grass below. They preceded to fly a kite and 3 of them got off and had a battle which you can see in the clip below. After that battle was over, the next 30 minutes they threw each half of the tube up and down from the roof to the ground. It looked incredibly dumb, but for some reason I couldn't stop watching them! : )




After singing for church in the small chapel, Baum and I headed to the old stadium where we sat and enjoyed the beautiful weather and again studied. I again got distracted but this time is was by women rugby players and two girls strutting their stuff walking around the track! I ended up calling the guys and we played some 4 on 4 frisbee. Ice and I ended the evening by taking my boxing bag up to the old stadium and hanging it from one of the concrete rafters. At one point we were breaking out in dance to some music we had playing and a guy popped out of a door! We thought the place was deserted so we were really cutting it loose. HA...he walked thru a door then stopped and back up and popped his head around a corner to see if we were for real!

A summary of the past year that I've been missing...

May brought a huge tornado that wiped out the town of Greensburg, KS. I taught bible school at Kiowa and was able to travel to Washington, IL for Luke and Heidi's wedding. That same weekend was the first time my roommates from Brazil, Daniela and Gabriela, traveled with us. Troopers!

June Stef Edelman was baptised and I again went to Jr. High Girls camp in Bloomington. I took Andrea Moser with me from Garden Grove. My cabin was pretty young this year and our name was The Voices representing the Wurmbrands who were tortured for Christ. I made it home two weekends in a row one for Father's Day and the other to help with harvest. The last weekend in June was the Topeka invite which was incredible! A huge amount of our friends came out and it was such a blessed time. Dani, Gabi, and I joined up with some guys from Nepal and we were on a summer volleyball team. I also randomly ran into a friend in Wal-Mart and she asked me to be on her VB team as well. It was a fun two months of sand volleyball and lots of hanging out. I got to know Karee, Sean, and Adrian better and so a big group of us were always together.

July Anna, Lindsay, Chelsie, Jason and I went to Jon and Beth's wedding in Rittman. The next weekend Matt, Jake, Darwin, Stef, Mon, and I went to Staci beers baptism in Mansfield. Two weekend in a row to Ohio. Wow! After htat I was able to spend two weeks in Magdalena visiting Steph! The best time to go to Magdalena and truly experience it is when there are no other work teams.

August Chel and I both went to Table Rock after work for a weekend. We took our bike's on my new bike rack. A whole crew of us went to the Leo sale and the next weekend us girls camped out at Lake Perry. That was also the weekend of Corn harvest so I went home to help dad. School started back up that next weekend.

September Chel and I went up to Minneapolis for Labor Day! I love going up there, it was again great fun! Steph came hom from Mexico for a week so we got to see her a little bit. I went to one of my campers baptisms in Bluffton and got to spend the weekend with Brooke and Vince. Brianna and Kellan rode out there with me and I think we had a pretty fun time! Dani and Gabi had to go back home this month so we had a lovely last time for them and then I went home for bean harvest. Ksu played Texas and I went over to Adrians one weekend for a BBQ then went home for milo harvest. I got home a lot for harvest because I really missed it and knew once I graduated I wouldn't be able to just go home for a weekend.

October chel and I stayed in Manhattan and went to the KSU vs KU football game and were able to paint some cool wall decorations. Mike had a bible study that friday before the weekend so we just stayed the night. Matt Kaeb started repenting that Monday night so we had a bonfire friday night for him! The next morning Linny, Chel, and I headed to Taylor. The next weekend was College weekend in Bloomington where we had a huge hang out session with all our lovely KS turned IL people. The next weekend I was able to get my motorcycle license by taking a class! It rocked!

November Tami and Dan got marriend and then I just went to Bern a lot of weekends. Dad went to Mexico again over Thanksgiving and Chel and I went to Gridley to help grandma host Thanksgiving. Monica, Maria, and Brady got baptized this weekend and their testimonies were SOO beautiful!!

December we again had a great turnout for Kiowa caroling and just had a fun fun weekend! Everyone went to Wales Christmas in Kansas City and my car ended up not starting at Cabelas where it had spent the week before. Jason was nice enough to take me up to it. Jas, Dan, Brady, Chel, and I went to Magdalena over Christmas breaks and drove through a blizzard to Denver. It took us like 12 hours to drive to Denver. The rest of the trip was really really nice and we went to church in Denver that Sunday. I talked with Mike Leman that Sunday afternoon about working for them once I got out of school. My cousin Alyssa got married the last weekend in December and afterwards Chel drove me to the airport where my friend Renee and I flew to Brazil to visit my old roomies Dani and Gabi.

January & February the first couple weeks was spent in Brazil and then I got home and all us girls got together for B's Personal Shower. The next couple months was a haze but I know at some point we went to Lamount Gridley for an invite. Chelsie moved to Eldorado and so a couple different weekends I went down to see her.

March was B's wedding and Steph and I were able to go to California for Spring Break. Chel moved to West Lafayette for her last rotation of Clinicals. Ice and I stayed in Manhattan quite a few friday nights and did everything from watching movies to hanging out with chel to going to the old stadium and having our own personal workout session!

Now it's April and my dear friends Maggi and Jason got engaged. I am for sure going to be moving to Denver when I graduate and last weekend Linny, Ice, and I went to CO where we had a great time with the Denver people and I was able to find an apartment to live in. Tuesday was my last day at Grain Science as the last couple months I can't work much because of my class schedule and I've got seniorities really bad. So today is my first day NO work in the 4 years I've been at college! It's gonna be awesome. Back in October Kun Fang from China moved in with us and this morning at 2 am she went back to China. We didn't see her a lot but she went home with me for Christmas and I think she really enjoyed her experience here in the states. I have a test tomorrow that I need to start studying again for as initially I thought it was Tuesday and got all studied up for it then. Ice and I are in an Aerobics Dance class where we have been incredibly uncordinated but have been having a lot of fun! I think I'm getting to the point of rambling so I'll end this very long summary here!
