Earthly Treasures
Last night I went to a park in Manhattan that has an awesome view. I was going to study, but my motivation got distracted when a family showed up to fly a kite. I couldn't stop watching them. They had a lot of fun and everything seemed happy and going great. They pulled away and I was like finally I can get some work done. However, they came back, and that's when my evening changed. When they pulled back into the park I was confused, but it was very apparent that the dad was torked. He was yelling and cussing and slamming things around. I was in shock. How could this dad that was having a ball with his child and wife be such a jerk. Well, he had lost his cell phone. Good excuse to be yelling and cussing around your child huh?!?! He obviously cared WAY to much about that cell phone to not care that he was exposing to his child and wife a very nasty person. My lesson for this week in bible study was about treasures, worry, and judgement. After the family left I just sat their and pondered. This scenario really hit home to me about the 'earthly treasures' I am studying. I know that I need to focus only on heavenly things, however I know that I don't. I, like this dad, get caught up in devices I have.
But I definately don't want to get caught up in something to the extent of being a jerk when I lose it. I know that I have being a not nice person when one of my favorite skirts got ruined or something of mine gets broken. Yet my reaction to losing one of these treasures is different than say losing a night of devotions?? But we all know which one is more important. It was a good accountability check and something that I will definately be working on. I love how the Bible is so complete. It applies to everything in life!

Frisbee's
Hint to All Students on a campus:
When you are walking across campus, never think for one moment that the frisbee flying out of control into the bushes you are walking by needs to be returned to it's owner. If by chance you don't see them waving their arms for you to leave it in the bushes until after you sail it back to them....turn and run for it.

Invisible Children
For 20 years the country of Uganda has been in a civil war. I learned about Uganda and Rawanda in my Geography class my Freshman year of college. The war started when the minority tribes started a genocide on the majority tribes. Conflict was settled when the countries leaders looked to a Holy Spirit filled woman. I can't remember her name. She gained lots of followers and overthrew the Minority's, which led to peace in Uganda. When she died a psychotic man, who by no means has anything Christ like, started the "Lord's Resistance Army" to keep the country practicing witchcraft. His 'rebel' soldiers, as they are called, are what started the war. The rebels against the new found government. This is just a little bit of history. No one likes to hear about wars...especially unpopular civil wars deep in the forests of Africa. But the children in Northern Uganda's story needs to be told. Tonight I watched a Documentary called "Invisible Children." Three filmmakers from California were in search of a story that would change the world when they haphazardly stumbled across a situation in Uganda where children are used as weapons. Thousands of children between the ages of 5 and 12 have been abducted by the rebels and forced to fight with the rebel army as child soldiers. They brainwash the children's minds by torture and kill those that show weakness or opposition. The girls are made into wives or mistresses for the rebels. Because of the high number of orphans because of the AIDS virus, the abducted children are used to kidnap more children from orphanages. For fear of being hunted by the rebels, children all over Uganda commute on foot every night to find safe places to sleep in their town centers. Over 30,000 children have been abducted and the government refuses to do anything about it. The children over there live everyday for survival. They don't go to school, they eat maybe once a day, and they are always fearing that they will be abducted. The organization has helped many children into safety and opened doors for them to go to school. On April 29 they are having a Global Night Commute in which they are asking people to lie down and close their eyes with for one night, so that they can open the world’s eyes to the unseen war. www.invisiblechildren.com has a list of all the places in the United States where they are doing this. They are doing it in Topeka the same weekend as the Topeka Invite. I think I'm going to do it in case anyone else who is coming has an interest to join me. I would highly recommend the documentary to all. Very thought provoking.
I needed to post about this because I just had to think through the whole documentary about what a blessed people we are. We don't fear every day that someone is going to come in and steal us or our children. We can live every day to our enjoyment, getting pretty much anything or everything we want. God tells us that "those to whom much is given, much will be asked of." I sometimes don't think I take this literally. I have been given so much. A family, a country where I can openly worship, safety....everything I am and have is because of God. And there are people....children...right across a body of water who have nothing. Why me? Why them? And even more important why am I not making use of the life God gave me? Those children sing praises to God when they get to the town because they are thankful for another night of safety. And we get fussy to God about him not letting us do what WE want to do. They praise God with nothing and we complain to Him with everything. Am I the one in worse shape? How could I not be? We can't save the world, but God doesn't ask us to. All He asks is us to do our part. Libby and I afterwards were talking about the small steps to get involved in doing our part. Prayer. That's the first step. Getting rid of self and humbling ourselves enough to let Him use us.
